How Much Yard Do You Need for a Backyard Court?
Before you fall in love with a court design, grab a tape measure. Here is how much space common backyard courts take, and how to tell what your yard can fit.
Pickleball
The lines of a regulation pickleball court measure 20 by 44 feet. Guides commonly recommend extra room around it, so plan for a larger total pad.
Half-court basketball
There is no single backyard size. Many half-courts are sized around the space available, and the cost guide we cite uses 30 by 30 feet as an example.
Tennis
A doubles tennis court is 78 by 36 feet inside the lines, and the full fenced area is much bigger. It fits larger lots only.
Multi-sport
A mid size slab can carry pickleball lines plus a hoop, which is a popular compromise.
Measure for these too
Setbacks from property lines, slope, trees, septic or utility lines, and access for trucks.
